In the story, Marvin Gable (Quan) lives alone and works in real estate for Cliff Cusick (Sean Astin), who has just named Marvin "Regional Realtor of the Year." Marvin bakes pink heart-shaped cookies for his clients and for the company's Valentine's Day party. He also bikes to work. He can be seen in many advertisements, especially on bus stop benches. His rival, Jeff Zaks (Drew Scott from "Property Brothers"), poses as a martial arts expert. But someone has sent him cryptic, homemade Valentine's Day cards and defaced a poster of Marvin Gable with a magic marker mustache. The movie poster reads: "You can't get over the past." Once upon a time, Marvin was a hitman for his brother, Alvin "Knuckles" Gable (Daniel Wu). Marvin was tasked with killing his brother's accountant, Rose (Ariana DeBose). Rose had been involved in scamming Knuckles out of money, but was tired of going unnoticed. Knuckles targets Rose and Marvin, sending henchmen of questionable loyalty to take them down, until it's finally brother vs brother.
I find Quan, a 53-year-old Oscar winner, attractive, but he's much older than his supposed lover, and the chemistry between Quan and the 34-year-old Oscar winner DeBose is more sizzling than it is sparkling. More screen time for Wu and Quan, and Quan and Astin would have been nice. More could have been done on Scott's rivalry with Jeff Zaks and the false bravado that sometimes comes with a black belt. The Russians, the ultimate villains, are absent enough to sense the imminent danger. Eusebio, the fight coordinator for The Fall Guys and stunt coordinator for Violent Night, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and The Matrix Resurrection, worked with stunt coordinator Can Aydin and cinematographer Bridger Nielson (Bullet Train, The Fall Guys) to create some amazing fight scenes. You'll never look at bubble tea straws the same way again. However, some scenes are a mess, which is a directing and editing issue, and the final fight scene is not as moving as the beginning. Although 2022's Bullet Train had diversity and geography issues, the film was well paced and had a good balance of violence and humor. The diversity of the cast in Bullet Train is questionable, but Love Hurts is somewhat believable. However, the location of East Asians in both films remains questionable. Admittedly, Love Hurts is a comedy in that it doesn't necessarily make you laugh, even though both of its leads are my favorite Oscar-winning actors. I'll wait until the stream is online. I hope Quan finds a better role in a better movie. "Love is Hard" is scheduled to be released nationwide on February 7, 2025. This film can be streamed on FlixHQ Pro.
